03 / COLOUR PAINT PROTECTION FILM

A new colour.
A protective purpose.

Colour PPF brings colour or finish and physical protection into the same film. It belongs in the conversation when both the new look and resistance to road wear matter.

What makes it different from vinyl?

Protective colour films such as 3M’s Protection Wrap Film use polyurethane and are designed for protection as well as appearance. Ordinary colour-change vinyl is primarily a styling material. The word “wrap” alone does not tell you which one is in the quote.

Ask for the manufacturer, product name, material and finish. Self-healing, hydrophobicity and stain resistance are product features to verify, rather than qualities to assume from a colour sample.

What should you discuss first?

Start with a real colour sample, your preferred gloss or satin effect, and the exact surfaces you want covered. Confirm product availability before committing to a particular look.

External panels, panel returns, door shuts and recesses are different parts of the job. A colour change can make a small uncovered area more noticeable. Agree the treatment of edges and the limits of the quoted coverage before installation.

Technical detail: compare thickness on the same basis

As a product-specific example, 3M lists Protection Wrap Film at 0.19–0.23 mm including adhesive, depending on colour. Its 2080-M12 vinyl example is 0.09 mm without adhesive or 0.11 mm with adhesive. These figures are examples from particular products, not universal definitions of PPF and vinyl.

Compare the installed layers consistently. Do not include removable liners or protective cap sheets in one figure and exclude them from the other. Thickness alone does not describe clarity, adhesive behaviour, surface quality, installation or the complete protection performance.

See the Protection Wrap technical bulletin, p. 2 and 2080 technical bulletin, p. 3.
